The Friends’ Education and Prevention Committee wants to keep you informed about the Consequences of Child Abuse.
As a community, we all need to be aware of the tragedy of child abuse and its detrimental and continuing consequences.
Do you know that child abuse is everywhere… across ethnic and economic lines… in cities large and small? The Friends’ Education and Prevention Committee works to inform our community about child abuse. We also strive to educate the public about ways to help break the cycle of abuse and neglect. You can take action when you see abuse in public.
How is a child affected by child abuse?
What can happen to the personalities of abused children? How are their lives affected?
“All types of child abuse and neglect leave lasting scars. Some of these scars might be physical, but emotional scarring has long-lasting effects throughout life, damaging a child’s sense of self, ability to have healthy relationships, and ability to function at home, at work, and at school.”
Can Abused Children Become Abusers While They Are Still Children Themselves?
Yes. The cycle of abuse has a high rate of repeating itself. Abused children can grow up to perpetuate the abuse on their own children because that is the only “model” they have. An even more tragic and terrible outcome is abused children becoming abusers while they are still children themselves.
Do you still believe in what we now know are popular Myths about Child Abuse and Neglect?
“It only happens somewhere else.” “It doesn’t affect me.” Just a few of the biases that we all carry with us.
